We need to talk about morning tea.
Not the packet of Scotch Fingers someone found in the cupboard. Not the leftover birthday cake from last Thursday that is somehow still on the bench. We are talking about morning tea that people actually look forward to. The kind that gets people out of their chairs and into the kitchen. The kind that turns a Tuesday into something worth showing up for.
After two decades of catering for Melbourne offices, we have strong opinions on this. Here is how to do morning tea properly.
Why Morning Tea Matters More Than You Think
Morning tea is not just about food. It is one of the few moments in a workday where people step away from their screens and actually talk to each other. Not in a meeting room with an agenda. Just standing around, eating something good, catching up.
For office managers and EAs, it is also a low-effort, high-impact way to show the team they are valued. A well-chosen spread once a week or once a fortnight does more for morale than most team-building exercises.
Match the Spread to the Occasion
The Regular Weekly Treat
Keep it simple and rotate. One week it is a Mixed Morning Tea Box with muffins, banana bread and a seasonal sweet. Next week, savoury tarts and frittatas. The week after, a banana bread box with fresh fruit. Variety keeps it interesting without blowing the budget.
A Client Visit or Board Day
Step it up. A Baby Cakes and Slices Box gives you fourteen baby cakes and fourteen mixed slices, which looks generous and polished without needing to plate anything. Add a fresh fruit platter on the side and you have got a spread that says “we have our act together.”
Someone is Leaving, or a Birthday, or a Win
This is where grazing comes in. Our grazing boxes are built for celebrations. They look impressive, they feed a crowd, and they cover sweet, savoury and everything in between. If you want finger food for an after-work drinks vibe, our boxed canapes range has you covered.
Sweet, Savoury, or Both?
Both. Always both.
A morning tea that is all sweet will get eaten, but people will be hungry again in an hour. A morning tea that is all savoury feels more like lunch than a break. The ideal spread has a mix.
On the sweet side: mixed muffins (baked fresh every morning), muesli bar slices packed with oats and cranberries, banana bread, and our mini Danish pastries. These are the items people grab first.
On the savoury side: savoury tarts, frittatas (multiple flavours, naturally gluten free), and mini artisan croissants with fillings. These are the items that keep people full.
Our AM/PM Tea packages combine both in ready-to-go boxes, so you do not have to build a custom order every time.
Do Not Forget the Dietary Crew
Nothing kills the vibe faster than half the team standing around watching other people eat because nothing on the table works for them.
When you are ordering morning tea, make sure there are options across gluten free, dairy free, vegan and vegetarian. Our frittatas are naturally gluten free with vegetarian and vegan versions. Fruit cups and acai pots cover vegan, dairy free and gluten free in one hit.
Every item on our menu is clearly labelled with dietary markers, so you can check at a glance. No guessing, no awkward emails asking what is in the tarts.
How Much to Order
A common question we get: how much morning tea do I need?
For a casual spread (not a meal replacement), plan for two to three items per person. A Mixed Morning Tea Box has eighteen items, so it comfortably covers six to eight people. For a team of fifteen, two boxes plus a fruit platter will do it.
If it is a celebration or a client event, go slightly heavier. Three to four items per person plus something to drink.
Make It Effortless
The best thing about ordering morning tea through Urban Foodies is that it arrives ready to serve. No plating, no prep, no hunting for serving spoons. Our Drop and Go office catering means the food shows up at your door, you put it on the table, and you are done.
